By Rubén Morales Iglesias: No Mediterranean Fruit Fly has been reported in Belize since October 2020 according to Francisco Gutierrez, Director of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA).
Gutierrez said, during the second day of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fооd Ѕесurіtу, аnd Еntеrрrіѕе’s virtual Annual General Meeting in Belmopan, that during 2020 they had to deal with 10 outbreaks. He said 221 fertile medflies were taken care of and all ten outbreaks were eradicated.
The first outbreak was detected in February and the last one in October.
Gutierrez said that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and BAHA signed a cooperative agreement in 2020 under which the USDA provided US$140,000 for the medfly work plan.
A similar plan has been signed for 2021.
