Public Service Union says the government is intimidating members, warns operatives that it has a list of names

By Benjamin Flowers: Today the Public Service Union (PSU) accused the Government of Belize (GOB) of sending operatives to intimidate public officers from participating in industrial action and warned those government operatives that it has their names on a list.

PSU First Vice President Dean Flowers said that reports are coming in from various departments including the Agriculture Department, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Northern Regional hospital, Corozal Community hospital, Punta Gorda hospital, of administrators intimidating and threatening open vote workers that they will lose their jobs if they participate in the upcoming strike planned for May 3.

” As we speak we have government operatives patrolling like police officers in and out of departments checking registers, checking desks. All in an effort to intimidate and silence public officers from exercising their rights,” Flowers said. “We want you to know that in the same fashion you’re taking down names, we’re taking down names.”

Flowers called on public officers to familiarize themselves with Constitutional provision for Freedom of Association, and with the laws governing the settlement of Trade Disputes. He stressed that the PSU is representing more than 6,000 public officers, including those who are not a part of the union because they will benefit from the union’s actions.

He warned the administrators who are committing the alleged abuses that “When the dust settles, we will be addressing those persons by name.”
