By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Yesterday history was made when the first shipment of sugar from Santander Sugar Group arrived at Romania,” said a Facebook post by The Santander Sugar Group, Belize.
“This is the first time a shipment of sugar from Belize crosses through the Black Sea. CONGRATULATIONS BELIZE!”
Romania is a country in Southeastern Europe. With a population of just under 20 million people, it’s the sixth most populated country of the European Union.
Santander did not specify the size nor value of the shipment but it’s good news for the agricultural sector which has been highlighted a lot lately with the Ministry of Agriculture having its AGM over the last two days and also with the recent announcement by the Government of Belize that Cabinet authorized the delivery of 50,000 tons of sugarcane from Orange Walk and Corozal sugarcane farmers to be milled by the Santander Sugar Group.
When the Santander Sugar Group started its 2021 crop season earlier in the year, Chief Executive Officer Jose Rodriguez and the Chief Financial Officer David Rodriguez said the company was excited to contribute to national and economic development.
In its sixth year of operations, Santander expected to produce 75,000 tons of sugar from 750,000 metric tons of sugarcane. The company said it also expected to produce 30,000 tons of molasses and would generate 38 million kilowatt-hours of electricity for the national grid.
In February, Breaking Belize News (BBN) reported that Santander milled 55% percent of its production from its own fields and 45% from farmers through its Cane Farmers Program.
The report also said that this year Santander planned to expand its export terminal in Big Creek in the Stann Creek District, its sugar and molasses capacity, and its export markets.
