By Aaron Humes: Sir Colville Young leaves behind a towering legacy of music, literary arts and politics.
In the last, he oversaw the administrations of Sir Manuel Esquivel, Said Musa, Dean Barrow and John Briceno, covering 28 years, and put final assent to all of Belize’s laws and represented Belize to Her Majesty the Queen, only six years his senior in age.
He was first President of the former University College of Belize, now part of the University of Belize, and while at St Michael’s College (now part of Anglican Cathedral College) taught both Musa and Barrow.
But his primary legacy is his literary contribution (plays, short stories and collection of Belizean proverbs and folklore) and music (as composer of various loved pieces), as well as his Music in the Schools Program which has served multiple schools with instruments to maintain school bands and the establishment of the Belize Band Fest, to be renamed after him when it resumes.
A father of four children with Lady Norma Young, his legacy is one of national service, including to the national Scouting movement, which has also named its headquarters after him.
