By Benjamin Flowers: This week, Minister of Education Francis Fonseca said that teachers who engage in strike action will have their salaries docked for every day they don’t go into work but the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) says that its members are not afraid.
In an interview with Love FM this week, Fonseca acknowledged that teachers have a right to strike, but he feels that their focus should have been getting students back into the classroom, given the extended period they were out of school due to COVID-19.
“Yeah, well they, the education rules again are very clear. I mean I think it’s section 102, I believe it’s section 102 of the education rules which makes it clear that where teachers or out on strike managing authorities have the authority to not pay those teachers who are on strike,” Fonseca said.
Today the BNTU joined the Public service Union (PSU) in a demonstration in Belize City, where the Belize City Branch President Tanya-Flowers Gentle, responded to the prospect of having their salaries docked.
“We are not intimidated…we are asking out teachers not to be intimidated by these memos that are coming from managements and administrators,” Flowers-Gillett said.
She also said that the BNTU is looking at working out an arrangement with the government as it did with the previous administration, to work off the time lost during the strike action so teachers do not suffer financially from the strike.
