Unions preparing to strike before the end of the notice period?

Posted: Friday, April 30, 2021. 1:17 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: There are several reports circulating that the Public Service Union (PSU) is preparing to launch strike action before the expiration of its -day notice issued to the Government of Belize.

Reports suggest that Public officers in Belize City will be walking off of their jobs today at noon, and gathering to protest in front of the Ministry of Education’s National Resource Center for Inclusive Education (NaRCIE) compound on Freetown Road.

There is also a message circulating that the PSU has extended an invitation to the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) to join in on the event.

The 21-day notice of industrial action that the PSU issued earlier this month, was set to expire on Monday, May 3. This coincided with the calendar of events that the PSU released on Monday, which marked May 3 as the day they begin strike action.

Breaking Belize News reached out to representatives of the union but could not confirm if the reports are accurate.

We will be following up with this story.
