By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Irene Thiessen won the We’re Back 5K race in Belmopan on Saturday morning.
Thiessen running for Westrac won the first in-person race after the more-than-a-year sports lockdown in 23 minutes and 25 seconds.
Her teammate Roxana Lemus was second in 24:18.3.
Third place was collected by Belmopan’s Evelyn Zuleta who clocked in 24:22.9.
Mary Carrillo of Santa Familia was fourth in 26:04.1.
Delmi Hernandez of Belmopan completed the Top 5 in 27:43.2.
The other runners finishing 6th-10th respectively were: Lucelly Ramos, Paula Hender, Sara Todd, Kenia Paramo, and Dianie Vasquez.
24 of the 26 runners, in both categories, who signed up showed up for this morning’s historic race. Ten participants were women.
Organizer Ricardo Salazar said he was satisfied with the first in-person race after the sports lockdown due to COVID-19.
“It was excellent. I wanted to set up the live updates so people would have seen it on the internet, but it didn’t work, so I’ll look into it for the next race,” Salazar said.
“It was good. We eliminated a lot of the hustle and bustle because of the short notice, but it turned out pretty well,” Salazar concluded.
