Today is Labour Day

Posted: Saturday, May 1, 2021. 12:10 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Most countries in the world observe today, May 1, as May Day or International Labour Day in honor of all workers, men, and women.

Despite it being a public and bank holiday, many are still working, and that’s fine. (Saturdays are effectively considered holidays for much of the working population, but many stores and businesses still open on the date).

Labour Day honors all the individuals who are Belize’s economic engine – its workers at home, in the fields, in the offices, everywhere.

These are the individuals that shape Belize’s development, that charter its growth, that ensures its future. Our work every day keeps Belize running, no matter what it is we do.

Ironically, teachers and public officers have laid down their tools in protest, both at being paid less for their work and for a perceived lack of direction in ensuring they can benefit from all the fruits of their labor.

But today we celebrate them and all the workers of the country, young and old.

A Happy Labour Day from all of us at Breaking Belize News (and obviously, no holidays here!)
