Certified masseuses meet with San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council to discuss turning Cayo district into a “wellness” tourism destination

Posted: Monday, May 3, 2021. 11:12 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: A group of certified masseuses recently concluded a meeting with the San Ignacio/Santa Elena (SISE) Town Council, to discuss plans of making the Cayo district into a wellness tourism destination.

The group, lead by Certified Masseuse/Aesthetician Monique Habet, met with Councilor Aaron Mai, Councilor Zahir Figueroa, and Councilor Omar Rodriguez, to discuss forming a Certified Masseuse Association as a part of the overall plan to transform tourism in Cayo.

The SISE Town Council explained that the meeting was geared towards sharing incentives for creating an association and a follow-up session is being scheduled to create a governing body for the association.

Those wishing to participate in the meeting are urged to contact Councilor Mai or Monique Habet for details.

The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) defines Wellness Tourism as, “travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal wellbeing.”

The GWI estimates that wellness tourism is a $639 billion global market in 2017, and projects that the trend is growing more than twice the rate of general tourism.
