Less than 10% of Indian population vaccinated against COVID-19

By Zoila Palma: India has become the new global epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic as the country faces a deadly second wave.

Reuters reports that despite being the world’s biggest producer of vaccines, the nation does not have enough for itself.

Only 9% of its entire population (1.366 billion) has received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 infections soared today by 368,147 new cases over the past 24 hours.

The death toll is now at 218,959 and over 3 million people are being treated for the virus.

Hospitals are filled to capacity and countries have been sending oxygen since some hospitals have reported shortages.

Indian authorities say that some patients have died due to lack of oxygen.

Some volunteers are now providing oxygen to patients inside makeshift tents.

Despite the growing number of infections, Indian authorities are yet to call for a national lockdown.

Meanwhile, other countries, Britain and Taiwan have sent oxygen and oxygen concentrators to assist the nation in their battle against COVID-19.
