Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations meets with Taiwanese Ambassador

Posted: Monday, May 3, 2021. 1:15 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: H.E. David Chien, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), recently hosted Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler at a courtesy lunch to discuss prospects of further collaboration between the two countries.

Mahler, accompanied by his Chief Executive Officer Nicole Solano, discussed with Ambassador Chien the current state of the tourism industry in Belize, which has been severely affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The Embassy of Taiwan acknowledged that Belize is a renowned tourism destination, known throughout the world for its natural beauty and also acknowledged that the country has potential for further tourism development throughout the country.

“The Republic of China (Taiwan) is Belize’s faithful and reliable ally. Both of us have signed the ‘Letter of Intent on Framework of Tourism Cooperation’ to promote the bilateral cooperation in the tourism industry in 2019. On this well-established basis, Taiwan’s Embassy looks forward to working and collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations of Belize to further enhance the tourism exchange between Taiwan and Belize,” the Embassy said.

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of friendly relations between Belize and Taiwan. In that time the two countries have collaborated in a number of areas, with special emphasis on education as well as arts and culture. At the end of April, the Embassy of Taiwan donated $50,000 to the Belize Scouts Association and Foundation which will be used to set up a steel band for the youths enrolled in the association.

As a long-time ally of Taiwan, Belize has made several appeals on the international level for the United Nations to include Taiwan in its processes and discussions. Last week, the Ministry of Health and Wellness issued a statement supporting Таіwаn’ѕ іnсluѕіоn іn thе Wоrld Неаlth Оrgаnіzаtіоn’ѕ асtіvіtіеѕ. That statement was later supported by members of the upper and lower houses of Parliament, as they called for fоr Таіwаn’ѕ іnсluѕіоn іn thе Wоrld Неаlth Аѕѕеmblу tо bе hеld іn Мау.
