By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Tuesday morning at the Agriculture and Trade Show Grounds in Belmopan, Agro Vet Jiron and Sons Company Ltd. donated $25,000 to the Ministry of Agriculture. The presentation was made by Joshua Jirón of Agro Vet to Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MOA), Jose Abelardo Mai.

Joshua Jirón presented two greenhouses with irrigation material and a variety of seeds valued at $25,000 on behalf of his father Ingeniero José Jirón and the company.

“The partnership we’re doing this morning is to pursue some of the newer technologies that are already available here in Belize. We have heavily invested in the agriculture sector and we know the Ministry is going full force behind it,” Jirón said.

“We are in this for the long haul. They as well are in this for the long haul.  We want to thank the Minister and his team that we can work hand in hand together. This is for the future, for my children, for your children; it’s something that all of us could benefit from, this is for the sustenance for the country, and I know it will go very far,” Jirón added.

Minister Mai said this is the cooperation between the private and public sectors that he talked about during his campaign.

“I want to first thank Mr. José Jirón and his family for what I consider an important donation. The certificate indicates it’s $25,000 worth of donations but I think it is more than that,” Minister Mai said. “They contributed to us two complete greenhouse structures including the irrigation system for these two structures.”

“That’s a substantial donation for us and we are grateful to Mr. Jirón and his family for that. They also donated a number of seeds for our research programs at Central Farm,” Mai added.

Minister Mai said the MOA received a variety of seeds for potatoes, onions, cabbage, sweet peppers, and tomatoes to have production all year.
