Breaking: Teachers union says members may have to accept pay cut

Posted: Wednesday, May 5, 2021. 3:46 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) told its members today that it will have to accept the 10 percent salary cut being implemented by the Government of Belize.

BNTU President Elena Smith, at a virtual meeting held today, explained to teachers that since GOB has already approved the cuts in the budget, it would be better to seek compensation for the cuts as opposed to trying to have the cuts reversed.

Smith also said that there are several offers on the table with regard to compensation which needs to be looked at to ensure that whatever option is chosen benefits all or most teachers.

Notably, the President of the Association of Public Sector Senior Managers (APSSM) Sharon Frasier, said yesterday that the 10 percent salary cut could be easily reversed via a supplementary budget being passed in the House of Representatives.

More on this later.
