By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei has agreed to adopt Mexico’s “Sembrando vida” tree planting initiative to create jobs for 18 to 29 year old’s in the country, Reuters reports.
The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to creat jobs and stem Central American migration to the United States.
“The meeting with President Alejandro Giammattei was beneficial. The brotherhood between our peoples has been strengthened,” Lopez Obrador said.
The program pays farmers to plant fruit or timber trees on small plots of land, with the aim of creating an industry in deprived rural areas.
Under the program, 700,000 trees are being planted and Obrador has referred to it as the largest reforestation effort in the world.
The program aims to create 1.2 million jobs and plant 3 billion additional trees through expansion into southeastern Mexico and Central America.
Guatemalan authorities say that in their country, the initiative will encourage young people to stay in their country and create small businesses.
