By Zoila Palma: The #TaiwanCanHelp campaign has garnered support from parliamentarians from around the world including Belizean officials who have extended their support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly.
In addition, officials from Australia, India, South Africa, South Korea, and Brunei are also joining the G-7 Foreign and Development Ministers’ Meeting as guests in London.
The Group of Seven is an organization made up of the world’s 7 largest advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
A joint statement issued on May 5 called for Taiwan’s participation in both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Health Assembly (WHA).
The G-7 foreign ministers reiterated the importance of improving global cooperation on important matters by ensuring “inclusive processes” in global organizations.
“We support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in World Health Organisation forums and the World Health Assembly,” the foreign ministers said.
The ministers said that Taiwan’s own COVID-19 response has proved that it can contribute and the worldwide community should be allowed to draw on the experience of all.
The Taiwan Embassy in Belize issued a statement saying that it welcomes the G7’s joint communiqué which supports Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization and the World Health Assembly, stressed the value of inclusive progress, and praised Taiwan’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Embassy also would like to thank the senators, members of the House of Representatives, and Government of Belize for voicing out to support Taiwan’s inclusion in WHO and WHA. Taiwan looks forward to continuing to work with Belize to further strengthen the partnership,” the statement said.
