Ian ‘Lion’ Gordon recognized by San Pedro Town Council for 8-day 110-mile running Tour of Belize

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Monday, May 3, Ian “Lion’ Gordon completed his 8-day 110-mile Run Around the Country in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, in celebration of his five years of running marathons, and today he was recognized for his efforts by the San Pedro Town Council.

Councilor responsible for Sports Jose Castellanos presented Gordon with a plaque for “his most ambitious project to date, a run around [the] country” in recognition of “his outstanding achievement!” said the San Pedro Town Council on Facebook.

“I want to thank the San Pedro Town Council and Mr. Castellanos for being recognized,” Gordon said to Breaking Belize News (BBN).

“You know, when I set out on this mission, I wasn’t expecting anything from anyone, so when they gave me that plaque, it’s much appreciated, and I feel that I’m being recognized for doing what I love. I’m grateful that I’m being seen,” Gordon added.

Gordon, who was born in Belize City, completed the final leg of his eight-day tour on Monday, May 3, with his friends in San Pedro where he’s been living for the last 22 years.

“It was crazy today, the love people me showed today, the love of unexpected people who showed up today, you know, it was crazy,” said Gordon at the end of the run. “Expect something big for my birthday on June 15. It’s halfway to the 101 miles in Belize City which I want to make an annual event.”

Gordon, originally from Belize City, started his 110-mile run on Monday, April 26 in Corozal. The next day he was in Orange Walk. He then went south to Punta Gorda and Hopkins-Dangriga. After that, he trekked west to San Ignacio & Santa Elena and Belmopan, before covering the entire mainland in Belize City on Sunday, May 2.

Running 13.1 miles every day, except Thursday in Dangriga (15.51 miles) and Sunday in Belize City (16 miles), he ran 110.11 miles in total.

Apart from friends and runners who he said he met for the first time, Gordon was accompanied during his country run by his daughter Nyla Gordon, 16, a third-form student at San Pedro High School.

Runners like Ana López, Brandon Adolphus, Roxana Lemus, Luis August Jr., and Kian Trejo came out to accompany him when he visited the different towns. In Orange Walk alone, 23 runners joined him in his quest.
