Joint Union-GOB negotiations continue today; no final decision yet

Posted: Thursday, May 6, 2021. 12:00 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: According to sources in the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), no formal nor final decision has been made on whether to accept the Government’s proposals for compensation for the cut of ten percent of salaries and imposition of an increment freeze.

The negotiation session of the BNTU, Public Service Union (PSU), and Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) with their Government counterparts takes place this morning at 10 a.m. in Belize City.

There was a private meeting of the BNTU on Wednesday which was apparently recorded, leaked, and distributed to members of the press. Reached for comment, BNTU President & Senator Elena Smith said she was “quite disappointed in such unethical behavior by whomever is sharing. We had a private meeting of our members.”

Comments in that meeting suggest that the unions may be amenable to listening to the Government’s proposals while maintaining their firm stance against the pay cut and increment freeze; demands of the institution of good governance measures; accompanying cuts to salaries and especially allowances of Government Ministers, Ministers of State and Chief Executive Officers.

The BNTU has been on strike since last week Monday, while the PSU joined in this past Monday.

We will have all the highlights and breakthroughs if any during the course of the day.
