New SI out, Weekend Warriors will race on Sunday, no spectators allowed

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The new Statutory Instrument is out, so the Weekend Warriors organization is having its first race in more than a year after the relaxation of the COVID-19 measures.

Edison Usher, Chairman of the Weekend Warriors, said the race will start on Sunday, May 9, at 7 a.m. and that the route would be announced later.

The new SI which allows that race says that “a person may host a recreational or competitive sporting event for a non-contact sport” but adds that “A sporting event that is allowed under these Regulations shall not be open to spectators.”

Earlier, the Weekend Warriors had called on its members to register for the upcoming season so that when the go-ahead was given all can race. That deadline expires today, so any cyclist who is not registered will not be able to race this Sunday.

Prior to today, cyclists were only allowed to train, and they have done that on the nation’s highways, but could not officially race.

“Even though we have been given the Covid protocols go-ahead from the Sports Minister, there is one main obstacle that has us on hold. That is the official SI from Central Government,” Usher had said earlier.

The new SI only allows sports like cycling which do not require personal contact like football or basketball. Players of contact sports are only allowed to train.

“A person may engage in– (a) non-contact sports; or (b) contact sports for training purposes only” says the SI.

It further states that “persons participating in any of the sporting activities … shall, while engaged in the sporting activity, be exempt from the following – (a) practicing social distancing; or (b) wearing a face mask or other face (nose and mouth) covering.”

The SI adds that “A person who contravenes this regulation commits an offence and shall be issued a violation ticket in accordance with Part VI.”
