By Zoila Palma: India is grappling to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic as the country has registered over 22 million cases and 246,000 COVID-19 deaths.
Health officials in the country have now issued a warning about a fungal infection found in some COVID-19 patients that can disfigure facial features and even cause death, Bloomberg reports.
Mucormycosis also known as “black fungus” infection, can damage the sinuses or lungs when the spores are inhaled, the Indian Council of Medical Research said on Sunday.
Local media report that the deadly infection can kill or maim patients.
Over the last 19 days, doctors in India have been noting an increase in the fungal infection cases.
Reports indicate that the fungus can attack through the respiratory tract, and was present in India before the Covid pandemic.
Meanwhile, hospitals around the country are short of beds, oxygen cylinders, medicine and vaccine doses as cases of the deadly virus continue to rise.
