Immigrant who fled to the US says that cartel threatened them in Guatemala and Belize

Posted: Monday, May 10, 2021. 9:16 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Guatemalan immigrant, Valeriano told Yahoo News that the primary reason why he and his family had to seek asylum in the United States of America was because they were threatened by a drug cartel.

After crossing the Rio Grande, Valeriano says that he found a job cleaning yards in Connecticut since he is saving to pay back $10,000 to moneylenders. The money was charged by smugglers to assist him to reach the US.

Valeriano explained that he and his family fled from Guatemala to Belize after they were threatened by a drug cartel. However, the cartel located and contacted them in Belize. That is when Valeriano decided to seek asylum in the US along with 1 of his 4 children.

Valeriano says that he left his other family members in Belize and fears that he may never see them again.

His story is one of many of the thousands of immigrants and immigrant children that reach the US border daily in hope of the American dream.

“I start thinking, why did I come? And then I remember that if I hadn’t they would have killed me, the kids would be alone, and then it’s more difficult for them,” Valeriano said.

Valeriano says that life is hard in the US but it is harder in his home country, Guatemala.
