By Zoila Palma: Every month, the United States Embassy in Belize highlights outstanding entrepreneurs in Belize.

For the month of May, the U.S. Embassy is featuring Jasmine Bennett in its Entrepreneur spotlight.

Bennett is the owner of The Candle Shop Belize, a store she established in 2016.

Jasmine has always been interested in handmade items and after making a candle for a friend as a present, she decided to start making more to sell to the general public resulting in The Candle Shop.

As the owner, Jasmine oversees the product development process, shipping, marketing as well as managing customer relations.

After researching suppliers Jasmine was able to find the necessary candle-making items and had a logo made with the help of a friend.

Jasmine says that the candles are 100% soy wax as they are more sustainable and eco-friendly compared to the petroleum oil alternative. When deciding on scents, Jasmine considers premixed scents as well as mixing 2 to 3 scents that she believes would work well together and tests them from that point in order to make a final decision. Most of the candles have edible scents relating to fruits and pastries.

Bennett says that she will soon be introducing a candle blend with both coconut and soy wax as it burns for longer and retains the smell better. This would allow her to give customers more for their money which is important to her as she strives to make her products affordable.

She also hopes to introduce wax melts for those who don’t wish to have an active flame candle. Jasmine would also like to open a physical store location in addition to the smaller business that currently retails them as well as her own studio to facilitate the candle-making process.

Jasmine encourages other young entrepreneurs to confidently seek the necessary advice and help of others in order to be successful.
