Unions update activities for strike action as negotiations with Government continue

Posted: Monday, May 10, 2021. 8:28 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) has issued an updated list of events to its members during ongoing strike action, as negotiations with the Government of Belize (GOB) over cost-saving measures for the public sector continue.

The PSU is hosting members meeting at its Belize City Headquarters today, will picket the upcoming Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, and will host an information day on Wednesday, with a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night. The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has not issued a list of activities; however, its members remain on strike.

The unions are preparing to take proposals made by the government to their membership for feedback in preparation for another round of negotiations, scheduled for Thursday, May 13.

Both the PSU and BNTU Presidents maintain that their respective memberships are opposed to the 10 percent salary cuts and three-year increment freeze, but acknowledge that adequate compensation to alleviate the hardships that these measures will cause would make accepting them easier.
