Belize City Council lights up City Hall green every night during Mental Health Awareness Month

Posted: Tuesday, May 11, 2021. 7:01 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: If you pass by City Hall any night this month, don’t be surprised if you see the place flooded by green lights. That’s because the Belize City Council is going green every night this month in support of Mental Health Awareness Month.

“We’re trying to find ways to support Mental Health Awareness Month which means we’re turning the City Hall lights green during the night because green is the colour for Mental Health Awareness Month,” said Erin Garnett, Communications Manager at the Belize City Council.

“We have made efforts to collaborate with the mental health organizations like the Mental Health Resource Center on Vernon Street and Mind Health Connect Belize,” Garnett said.

Garnett said Mind Health Connect Belize is a Belize City-based organization that deals with mental health.

“They have a month-long series of activities that they have organized to bring awareness to this month,” Garnett said.

“We’re also bringing back our mental health series’ videos. This is a four-part series. We plan on sharing one on social media, Facebook and the Belize City Council website, belizecitycouncil.org, once a week,” Garnett said.

“These are short videos that we produced with counselor Amy Jex. These discuss mental health issues such as dealing with emotions, decision making, dealing with conflicts, and also self-esteem; ways to cope with mental health.”

Garnett said that at the local government level, the Belize City Council is just trying to do its part in supporting the cause of the mental health initiative.

“A big part of mental health awareness is just starting the conversation,” Garnett said.

“I think there is a lot of misconception,” she added. “Mental health is not only just about bringing awareness to this month; it’s not only just about realizing that people who suffer from mental health issues are deserving of understanding and comfort but also supporting and characterizing mental health in everyone. For example, taking a few minutes out of a stressful workday to meditate, that’s characterizing mental health.”
