Catholic Churches in Germany blessing same-sex unions despite ban from the Vatican

Posted: Tuesday, May 11, 2021. 4:10 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Around 100 Catholic Churches in Germany have begun holding masses to bless same-sex couples, despite being expressly forbidden by the Vatican to do so, reports the Jamaica Gleaner.

In contravention of a document published by the Vatican’s orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, back in March which said that Catholic clergy cannot bless same-sex unions because God “cannot bless sin,” the priests in Germany have begun a week-long initiative to bless same-sex couples in their churches.

The hosting of services to celebrate gay unions is said to be a part of a larger escalation of tensions between conservative and progressive Catholics. Pope Francis, who has been praised for his progressive views on homosexuality and the Catholic Church has reportedly reminded the German hierarchy that it must remain in communion with Rome as the reform process known as a ‘synodal path’ continues.

Rev Jan Korditschke, a Jesuit who works for the diocese in Berlin, preparing adults for baptism and helps out at the St. Canisius congregation said that he will lead blessings for queer couples at a worship service on May 16, without fear of the consequences from higher-ranking church officials or even the Vatican.

“I am convinced that homosexual orientation is not bad, nor is homosexual love a sin,” Korditschke told The Associated Press in an interview on Friday. “I want to celebrate the love of homosexuals with these blessings because the love of homosexuals is something good,” he said.
