Unions continue strike action

Posted: Tuesday, May 11, 2021. 11:41 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) and Public Service Union (PSU) continued their industrial action against the Government of Belize (GOB) today, with a demonstration in front of the House of Culture in Belize City, where today’s Cabinet meeting is being held.

The picketing drew a considerably smaller crowd than the massive protest staged by the unions last week as negotiations between Government and the Joint Union Negotiating Team (JUNT) continue. The leaders of the PSU and BNTU have noted that GOB delivered drafts for whistleblower and asset recovery legislation, with illicit enrichment draft legislation set to be handed over sometime this week.

The unions are also meeting with their members over the recent proposals being offered by GOB with respect to the much-debated 10 percent salary cut and three-year increment freeze. The JUNT and GOB return to negotiations this Thursday.
