UDP offers a hand to address crime in Old Capital

Posted: Wednesday, May 12, 2021. 4:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: After four murders in Belize City in five days and a general spike in violent crime after Police recently boasted of having it under control, the Opposition United Democratic Party has called on the Government to act.

And it says it is prepared to help, offering “to form a bipartisan Crime Prevention Committee along with the Briceno Administration comprised of our Shadow Minister of Police, Shadow Minister of Youth, Shadow Minister of Human Development and the respective Government Ministers so we can effectively tackle crime through the formulation and execution of a comprehensive strategy which must include components addressing the root causes. The time is now to unite on this critical national issue.”

We note that at similar times when the UDP was in administration and the PUP in Opposition, similar overtures were ignored or brushed aside.

The UDP cites “gang war that is terrorizing the nation’s population center and commercial hub.”

But it also points out that the spike is not limited to the City; other parts of the country, such as Punta Gorda, have recently seen an unprecedented rise in violent and gang-related crimes.

It concludes, “The UDP acknowledges that fighting crime is everybody’s business, but asserts that it is the government which has the responsibility to lead the effort, bringing key stakeholders together and matching its rhetoric while in Opposition with the resources it now controls as the administration in charge.”
