By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Today as Minister of Agriculture, Fооd Ѕесurіtу, аnd Еntеrрrіѕе (MAFSE) Јоѕе Аbеlаrdо Маі presented seedlings to the Carmelita Government School at the beginning of his tour of Orange Walk, the principal of Carmelita Government School, Keith Augustine, took the opportunity to present his school as an example for other primary schools to follow in the field of agriculture.
Augustine said that they believe in diversifying education. Education is the key to success but we also need life skills he said.
The principal said the school has a sustainable agriculture programme that includes a school garden and a tilapia pond.
Their aquaponics pool is courtesy of a school in Canada, the Milwoods Christian School which funds the Tilapia Pond Project in Carmelita and at other schools in the Orange Walk District.
The school also gets assistance from the Ministries of Education and Agriculture.
It also has a poultry program for eggs and chicken.
The children eat what they produce said principal Augustine.
The school also has a sewing program and arts program (painting and sculpture). The idea is to have arts for business, said Augustine.
Additionally the Carmelita Government School has a school feeding program.
Augustine thanked his staff and all the people who have made the school’s program a success, including the Education Department.
Apart from all of that, Augustine said the Carmelita school also offers adult continuing education. Augustine said farmers need to be literate to move ahead well.
