Government as strike wears on: ‘Unions have until Friday to strike without losing pay’

Posted: Thursday, May 13, 2021. 10:38 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize has warned teachers and public officers who are currently on strike that they have until Friday to remain on strike and still be paid.

In a letter dated May 11, which was signed by Prime Minister John Briceño, teachers and public officers were given up to Friday, May 14, to strike without financial repercussions.

Last week, Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) President Elena Smith, told the media that the government made a commitment not to dock the pay of those participating in the strike. The Public Service Union (PSU) began its second week of strike on Tuesday, while the BNTU is currently on its 13th school day on strike.

The unions and government are set to meet today to discuss, what the Prime Minister categorized as the government “best offer” with respect to compensating teachers and public officers for the 10 percent salary cut and three-year increment freeze, that has been approved in the national budget and should take effect this month.
