Prime Minister hopeful on renegotiation of Superbond

Posted: Thursday, May 13, 2021. 6:38 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño says that he is hopeful about the renegotiation of the Superbond.

The Prime Minister says that he was not surprised by the bondholers’ response but that both sides need to put their ‘cards on the table’.

“It is time for the real work to begin and we will soon be sitting down to see how we break the impasse and move forward. Belize is in a position and we just cannot afford to pay the bond the way it is structured,” Briceno said.

Briceño says that Government is seeking to reduce what Belize owes, hopefully reducing the interest rate and finding a sustainable path for Belize.

“As much as we want to pay we don’t have money. But I believe that we will find a compromise to see how we can put Belize on a sustainable path,” Briceño added.
