By Zoila Palma: Today, the Belize Workers Union (BWU) issued a statement expressing its full support for its brother unions, the BNTU, PSU and APSSM.
“Unions is a powerful tool for workers seeking to achieve economic and social justice. A union is an organization of working people who stand together and speak with one voice to improve their overall lives,” the BWU said.
The BWU said that it views with concern the recent uproar ‘that the government choices are causing among the teachers and public officers.’
The BWU says that these concerns are causing teachers to fight and strike for what they have worked so hard for.
“Teachers are the foundation of every student career life and sometimes even more in their personal life. They inspire, encourage and motivate students; ‘our children’ to strive in most difficult circumstances that life has to offer,” the BWU added.
The BWU urges the Government to take into consideration another alternative to settle this matter before it gets out of hand.
“This pandemic which we are all facing and suffering has not been easy to anyone. It has affected us all, in many ways and reducing the income of the teachers and public servants will definitely not help matters,” it added.
The BWU says that it stands ready to remain engaged in the development of this case and to amplify its actions; should the need arise.
