Lord Michael Ashcroft makes donation to Belize Athletics Association

By Benjamin Flowers: Sports in Belize is slowly making its recovery after being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year and the Belize Athletics Association (BAA) has gotten some assistance getting back into full swing with a donation of equipment from Lord Michael Ashcroft.

The BAA announced yesterday that Lord Ashcroft made a donation of “much-needed” equipment, which the association’s President, Dean Sutherland JP, said will better enable its athletes to host national events and even regional tournaments in the future.

“It will provide a fantastic boost to our efforts to help our athletes perform to the very best of their abilities and go a very long way in assisting the BAA to provide the environment for our athletes and coaches to train using the proper equipment,” Sutherland said.

The BAA noted that Ashcroft will also be sponsoring the coaches’ accreditation program and the BAA will soon be implementing such a program for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.

“I am delighted to be supporting athletes from Belize in their desire to reach their full potential. I am providing this sponsorship because I admire the on-going work of the Belize Athletics Association, along with its ambitious projects for the future,” Ashcroft said.

The BAA said that it will be announcing a date for a press conference regarding the donation, and will be presenting some of the athletes who will be using the equipment, for comment.
