City casino reported closed after reported COVID-19 outbreak

Posted: Saturday, May 15, 2021. 8:42 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A prominent casino establishment in Belize City has reportedly been forced to close after more than a dozen employees tested positive for COVID-19.

The establishment is believed to be scheduled for deep cleaning tomorrow.

The Government had allowed casinos to reopen as much as a month ago but there were and remain concerns about the proximity and movement of customers and staff in a closed door environment.  It has not been made clear what caused the outbreak.

Belize reported 42 active cases up to Friday.

The Government has so far declined to re-open national borders as the pandemic continues to rage in Mexico and Guatemala; clubs and bars remain closed for concerns similar to those with casinos, and there are concerns that vaccination should be made mandatory to enter public areas, in order to keep the numbers down. Presently all vaccination for COVID-19 is voluntary.

This is a developing story.
