United States to release list of corrupt Central American officials that may face sanctions

Posted: Saturday, May 15, 2021. 4:45 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: At the end of June, the United States will release a list of corrupt Central American officials who may face sanctions, Reuters reports.

Special Envoy Ricardo Zuniga said that the Biden administration was also considering further sanctions against officials in the region.

The U.S. officials see corruption as 1 of the main drivers for the consistent flow of migrants along with poverty and gang violence.

Zuniga did not name officials who might face sanctions.

However, the administration have spoken out against recent occurrences in Guatemala-lawmakers’ refusal to swear in a corruption-fighting judge and the removal of top judges and the attorney general in El Salvador.
