By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Farmers of the Year were recognized by Minister of Agriculture Јоѕе Аbеlаrdо Маі at August Pine Ridge during tour of the Orange Walk District on Friday.

In effect the presentation of two bulls and a heifer was done at the farm of Teresita Sanchez, the Woman Farmer of the Year.

“We brought her prize, a young bull,” said Minister Mai. “She has shown us her farm, very small farm, but she grows everything here. She has broilers, she has layers, she has pigs, she has a little young bull now, she has some vegetables, she has a mixed farm here.”

“I’m feeling very, very proud today,” Sanchez said. “This year I will continue in the agriculture sector. Right now, I planning to plant some citrus.”

She also grows beans, corn, and tiny onions, and also makes red and black recado.

The Senior Farmer of the Year is Amniel Mesh San Antonio, Cayo. He received a heifer from the Ministry of Agriculture.

“I feel great because I’m the first in the Mesh family to be a Farmer of the Year,” Mesh said. “We plant from peanuts, corn, potato, sweet pepper, watermelon; once it’s a vegetable, we plant it.”

The Junior Farmer of the Year Andre Camal from Xaibe, Corozal, got a bull as his prize.

“I’m very grateful to the Lord, to the agriculturists in Corozal, especially to Mr. Campos and Andy Che for their support and motivation. They motivated me to participate in the Junior Farmer of the Year,” Camal said. “I specialize in onions, but I plant tomatoes, sweet pepper, watermelons, plaintain, citrus and [grow] some animals too.”

“My goal is to be sustainable.”
