Miss Mexico crowned 69th Miss Universe

By Zoila Palma: Miss Mexico, Andrea Meza was crowned the 69^th Miss Universe last night.

Meza has a software engineering degree and competed against 73 women from around the world for the coveted crown and title.

During the competition, Meza was given the topic of changing beauty standards, and offered an inspiring answer.

“We live in a society that more and more is more than advanced, and as we advance as a society, we’ve also advanced with stereotypes,” she said. “Nowadays beauty isn’t only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirit, but in our hearts and the way that we conduct ourselves. Never permit someone to tell you that you’re not valuable,” Meza said.

Then, at the time that the announcer shouted, “Viva Mexico,” screams of joy were heard. She was crowned by Miss Universe 2019, Zozibini Tunzi. Tunzi had the longest reign among all Miss Universe titleholders, having held the crown for 17 months.

“My Miss Universe win is my ancestors’ wildest dream. We are now in a world where a Black African girl from a country that is only 27 years into its democracy can represent them on the global stage. I want to honor them for fighting my freedom so that I could be where I am today. Thank you to my family and South Africa,” Zozibini said.

Meza then took her first walk as Miss Universe at the front of the stage

The pageant was held in Florida this year after it was canceled last year for the first time due to COVID-19.

The competition aired in over 160 countries around the world.
