By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department says that Police Constable Darnell Garcia was not acting in any official capacity when he shot and wounded 20-year-old Patricia Castillo over the weekend.
Inspector Hilberto Romero of the Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) explained that there is an ongoing investigation into the shooting which occurred on Saturday, May 15. While Romero would not offer any comment on the details of the case, he confirmed that Garcia was not on active duty when he fired the shot that entered Castillo’s right buttocks cheek and exited through the left.
Romero said that Garcia’s personal firearm has been confiscated as a part of an ongoing investigation, and appropriate action against Garcia, if any, will be determined when the investigation is concluded.
Garcia alleges that he opened fire on the taxi, being driven at the time by Castillo’s father, Patrick Castillo because the vehicle tried to run him off of the road as he was driving on the Philip Goldson Highway near the Brodies warehouse.
Meanwhile, Castillo’s injuries were classified as non-life-threatening.
This is a developing story.
