By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Men’s National Football Team (BMNT) is in its second three-day cycle of training at the FFB headquarters in Belmopan in preparation for its World Cup qualifier against Nicaragua in June.
National Team coach Dale Pelayo said that during these short cycles the team trains twice a day at six in the morning and seven in the evening for an hour and a half each. On Wednesday, the second session starts at 3pm so players can head home after it’s over at 4:30pm.
“We’re going into full camp on the 24th until we travel on the first of June,” Pelayo said.
These two cycles have been for the locally-based players.
According to Pelayo, the foreign-based players will join later closer to the match against Nicaragua on June 4.
He said that Deon McCaulay was hoping to join the team this week.
“Angelo Capello should be in on the 25th. Tony Rocha, Michael Salazar and Carlos Bernárdez should come in for the FIFA dates around the 31st. Nembhard and Nana-Mensah as well.”
“I need to go more offensive so I need more offensive midfielders, so I brought in Tony Rocha, Denmark Casey and Mike Salazar.”
Belize needs to go all out against Nicaragua if we are to have any chance of topping the qualifying group. Things are not in our favour right now despite having three points just like Haiti and Nicaragua and that’s because we’ve played two games while these other countries have only played once.
Belize defeated Turks and Caicos 5-0 but lost 2-0 to Haiti.
So, at this point we have to beat Nicaragua, total six points, and hope that somehow things work in our favour. Considering that Haiti is highly favoured to beat the Turks and Caicos Islands, who we beat 5-0, Belize would then depend on Nicaragua defeating Haiti. That would create a three-team three-way tie at six points.
If that were to happen, goal differential and head-to-head games would be brought into play in that order.
A loss or draw against Nicaragua effectively puts us out of any contention of making the next round.
The BMNT will play against Nicaragua on June 4, 2021 at the Nicaragua National Football Stadium in capital Managua.
