BNTU branches host ‘funeral service for corruption’

Posted: Tuesday, May 18, 2021. 8:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Branches of the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) in Belmopan and San Ignacio are hosting a staged “funeral service for corruption.”

The procession includes a coffin with banners and the teachers dressed in black and white holding flowers.

They are walking along principal streets of the towns.

The Belize Branch of the BNTU is also hosting a funeral for corruption at 11am in Belize City.

While the Government of Belize (GOB) has agreed to the majority of the unions’ demands, the teachers are reportedly unhappy with the decision to proceed with the 10 percent salary cut and three-year increment freeze.

The BNTU is taking the position to strike, in spite of the warning issued by GOB last week that those who continue to strike after May 15, will have their salaries docked.
