By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) announced today that its investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak reported at the Princess Casino in Belize City continues with contact tracing.
The Ministry said that it has been investigating the outbreak since it was identified on May 15, and has implemented heightened surveillance throughout the country with emphasis placed on anyone who has frequented the Princess Casino.
“Any of those persons or anyone who has any cold or flu-like symptoms, please visit the nearest health facility in order to be assessed. The only means of controlling an outbreak is through increased testing, early isolation of positive cases, and early treatment,” the Ministry said.
Dr. Natalia Beer, Maternal and Child Health Advisor for the MOHW, said today that the Ministry is currently offering vaccinations to casino staff as a part of the containment measures.
“They would fall in the group under the tourism industry,” Beer said. “When we’re dealing with situations like COVID-19, where contact tracing is so important, there will be accompanying measures at that establishment for those who are ready to receive the vaccine then we have to give them the opportunity without looking at if they pertain or not to a phase or not that is open.”
