P.M. must step up to negotiation, unions will not back down

By Aaron Humes: Perhaps Prime Minister John Briceno himself will need to come to the negotiating table to end the current standoff, the Joint Unions suggested today.

To give the devil – former Prime Minister Dean Barrow, not meant pejoratively – his due, said PSU President Gerald Henry, he would have been at the table. Briceno, he noted, has yet even to respond to overtures to meet.

The services of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry may be called on to mediate if necessary, and even a trip to court could be possible, said Elena Smith; in fact, “anything is possible.”

For now the unions are holding the line, and according to Henry, the Public Service Union  has actually increased membership during the time of the strike.
