By Aaron Humes: Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) President Senator Elena Smith dismissed talk of implementing laws to which the new Government had already committed in its #planbelize manifesto as in any way representing compensation to the trade unions for the cut in their salary and increment freeze.
The unions say they may have accepted the promissory note and rebalancing of pay scales, although the former could not be put in writing as yet as it would negatively affect the domestic debt. Nonetheless, the Unions would have accepted a written commitment to the same.
No date has been set for a further meeting, but the Unions will formally respond, pointing out the areas that need adjustment to reflect what had been verbally agreed to in the meetings.
And as to whether it is indeed the “last offer,” Smith said clearly her members don’t think so.
