By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) has announced that as of today, Wednesday, it has milled 812,877 tons of sugar cane and produced 85,220 metric tons of sugar.
The millers took time in a short statement issued this evening to thank industry stakeholders for their cooperation even it as continues to fight losing a 50,000-ton quota of cane to be milled to southern rivals Santander Factory of Cayo District.
BSI’s figures as of May 16 (before today’s announcement) also show that 40,066 tons of direct consumption sugar have been produced, most in its short history.
The tons cane to tons sugar ratio, at 9.56 to date in the crop, is catching up to last year’s figure of 9.82. More importantly, the factory has been more efficient, producing 96 percent of sugar from cane and grinding in 86 percent correct time.
In a comment to stakeholders, BSI notes that for this week, “The National Meteorological Service of Belize has forecast increased rainfall from Thursday through the weekend. We encourage farmers to control burning and to harvest on higher ground. Best practices during and after bad weather:
Harvest in higher areas. Avoid burning and harvesting in low-lying areas as of Tuesday May 18, 2021.
Do not over burn. Burn only the amount required for your daily delivery.
Use chain delivery trucks if possible in the event the factory needs to offload.
Minimize or avoid use of ‘push pilers’ and increase the size of cane bundles to reduce the number of “grabs” made by the loader.”
The company has estimated that it will finish the season in late June or early July, milling approximately 1.1 million tons of cane.
