Fifty-two percent of teachers now vaccinated

Posted: Wednesday, May 19, 2021. 3:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: More than half the country’s teaching corps has been vaccinated against COVID-19, the Minister of Education Francis Fonseca told us this afternoon.

Fifty-two percent is the official figure given by the Ministry of Health as of yesterday, Tuesday, and while he hopes it could be more by the restart of school, that’s not a bad figure at this point of the drive.

The vaccine is not mandatory for teachers, but it is encouraged, reminded Fonseca. The Ministry of Health is going out of its way to assist in getting teachers vaccinated including sending mobile teams for teachers working in larger schools.

The Minister also joshed BNTU National President Elena Smith to get over her reported fear of  needles and get the jab.
