Police suspect Marquin Drury murder to be gang-related, measures being implemented to prevent retaliation

By Benjamin Flowers: Police suspect that the murder of 29-year-old Marquin Drury which took place on Santa Barbara Street Belize City, last night was gang-related and have since been making moves to prevent any retaliatory violence.

Drury was standing with several others outside a house on Santa Barbara Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. when a vehicle drove up and someone inside opened fire on the crowd. Drury was hit and pronounced dead later at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Assistant Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo of the Eastern Division Crimes Investigation Branch said that the shooting is believed to be the result of a recent feud between waring city gangs and that Drury was possibly killed because a rival faction decided to seize the opportunity when they saw him standing on the street.

“From last night police presence has been tightened in that area. We know who are the two groups that are involved and police have been there from last night and also this morning there have been several foot patrols and vehicle patrols in that area where we suspect that something might flare-up,” Cowo said.

He added that, apart from looking for the shooter, police are also looking for the men standing with Drury who dispersed when the shooting happened.
