Reforestation initiative: 280,000 acres to be re-forested

Posted: Thursday, May 20, 2021. 3:48 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Minister of Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet said today that Government is engaging in re-forestation initiatives.

Minister Habet commented on the causes of de-forestation including short term logging licenses that have been destructive under the former administration.

Minister Habet says that his ministry is already identifying the locations for about 280,000 acres of land to be re-forested in Belize.

With relation to logging licenses and permits, the Ministry says that it will implement sustainable logging practices and policies.

In addition, the ministry will focus on promoting the use of value added products including furniture, cutting boards, bowls, souvenirs made of Belize’s exotic woods.

At this time, the exotic wood is being exported as lumber but Minister Habet says that businesses can earn better when exporting souvenirs of exotic woods already made and made in Belize.
