Medina’s Construction Limited awarded contract for $8 million for works on Southside of Belize City

By BBN Staff: In 2018, the Government of Belize secured a loan of BZ$20 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to implement the Climate Vulnerability Reduction Program (CVRP).

The loan from the IDB provided for several contract packages and lots.

“Based on the no-objection from the funding agency, the Government of Belize via the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has signed a contract agreement with Medina’s Construction Limited for Protective Work Package 2 – Lot 1 for a sum of BZ$8,312,678.21,” a statement from Government said.

According to the statement, the package was let to International Competitive Bidding (ICB) on two different occasions and on the last procurement cycle, 4 bids received on July 3, 2020.

These bids were assessed by evaluators from several government ministries, and based on set criteria and no-objection from the IDB, Medina’s Construction Ltd. was determined to be the lowest evaluated bidder and was awarded the contract to complete the proposed works. 

The scope of works for this Protective Work Package 2- Lot 1 includes the following:

    Earthworks, demolition of the collapsed Collet Canal section from Caesar Ridge Bridge to the seaside;

    Pile foundation for the concrete line canal (70 mts.) and pump house;

    Supply and installation of a pump station with three Archimedes screw pumps;

    Two sluice gates and a pump house with electrical control pane;

    A siltation basin and breakwater;

    Boat slip for four boats;

    Landscaping of the general area and the rehabilitation of the Old Fish Market building in the area.

The primary objective of the loan is to alleviate the incidence of flooding in the South Side of Belize City and while it consists of several lots, this lot is the main package under the loan which will contribute significantly to alleviating flooding in South Side of Belize City, an area inhabited by the most vulnerable of the city’s residents. 

The design of the works was done by M&K Ingeneria Civil S.A De C.V. from Spain and the project will be implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing – Program Management Unit, while a Technical Team within the unit will be in charge of the supervision.

 The contract duration for completion of the works is 12 months and it is anticipated that works will commence on June 7, 2021.
