Police Commissioner: ‘Unions continuously breaking the law during protests’

Posted: Sunday, May 23, 2021. 7:59 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has said that he understands the cause that teachers and public officers are fighting for; however, they are repeatedly breaking the law with the methods they choose to employ.

In a recent interview, Williams addressed the teachers’ latest protest in Orange Walk where they unlawfully removed a barricade and protested in front of Prime Minister John Briceño’s home. Williams said that while Prime Minister Briceño did not have an issue with protestors passing his house, there were major security concerns dating back to 2005 when protestors began hurling objects at former Prime Mister Said Musa’s house.

“The actions of the teachers continue to be one, that is, to some extent, against the law. They are picketing, they are demonstrating without any permit, they are going about in large crowds above what the quarantine regulations stipulate, and we continue to exercise restraint, because we really and truly want to avoid any sort of confrontation with them,” Williams said.

He stressed that confrontation will not lead to a good ending for anyone involved and as such police are trying to avoid it, but actions such as blocking roads, blocking off bridges, and obstructing traffic, are becoming an increasing problem.

“Again, I will sound the warning to the teachers that their actions are becoming intolerable, not only to the police but to the wider public,” Williams added.

He said that the police will continue to work with unions to have their events without incident, but that the courtesy can only be extended so far before police have to take more stern measures to ensure that law and order is maintained.
