El Salvador’s president alleges plot to increase migration as United States shifts financial aid from government to civil society organizations

Posted: Monday, May 24, 2021. 8:31 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has alleged a plot against his country by the United States following a decision to shift financial aid from government agencies to civil society organizations on Friday, reports the Associated Press via Yahoo News.

Responding to the decision of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to pull funding being given to  Supreme Court justices and the Attorney General, President Bukele tweeted “How great that (civil society organizations) receive foreign financing, because they will not receive a cent from the Salvadoran people.”

He also tweeted “It’s very revealing that USAID chose to stop funding… SECURITY! Is the real plan to create more immigration?”

In a statement announcing the shift USAID Administrator, Samantha Power, said that the decision was taken due to “deep concerns” over the recent changes in El Salvador’s justice system. The statement said that USAID’s funding is being redirected from the the court and Attorney General’s Office, the National Civilian Police and El Salvador’s Institute for Access to Public Information and given instead to local civil society groups and human rights organizations “for promoting transparency, combating corruption and monitoring human rights.”

USAID did not elaborate on how much funding was being redirected.

Following an overwhelming victory in the February 28 elections, one of the first moves made by Bukele’s New Ideas party was to remove the five justices from the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Chamber in a process the justices claim was unconstitutional. The new Congress also voted to replace the Attorney General with a reported Bukele loyalist.

International observers fear that these moves coupled with the supermajority won in the election removes necessary checks and balances and puts El Salvador’s democracy at risk.
