By Aaron Humes: The National Garifuna Council (NGC), a non-governmental organization representing the Garinagu of Belize since 1981, held its 36th Annual Convention virtually from May 21st – 23rd, 2021.
The Convention, the highest authority and decision-making body of the NGC, met to discuss the community’s business matters including: the adapting of resolutions to be implemented during this term of office, summary of the past year, and planning of the upcoming annual activities. This year’s Convention focused on Garifuna land, food security and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Garifuna communities.
Incumbent President Sandra Miranda-George moves down to first vice president; the new president is Andrew “Mick” Castillo. The new executive, serving until 2023, includes Second Vice President – Beatrice Mariano; Secretary – Sheena Zuniga; Assistant Secretary – Darnelle Sterling; Treasurer – Cynthia Cayetano and Assistant Treasurer – Senator Erica Jang.
The next Convention will be held in person next year at Georgetown Village, Stann Creek District.
This year’s virtual convention was well attended by members at home and abroad.
