By Zoila Palma: Today, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement protesting its exclusion as an observer from the 74th World Health Assembly that commences today.

Parliamentarians from around the world joined in calling for Taiwan’s inclusion even as an observer in the World Health Assembly and World Health Organization’s activities.

The campaign #LetTaiwanHelp also garnered the attention and focus of parliamentarians in Belize.

Taiwan’s Minister Joseph Wu and Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung said that the Government and people of Taiwan will continue to assert their right to attend and thanked all in the international community for their support.

“The UN system, including the WHO, continues to emphasize the ultimate goal of leaving no one behind, so that there might be no gap in global pandemic-prevention efforts; however the WHO ignores the rights of the 23.5 million Taiwanese people to health, as well as the international support for Taiwan’s participation,” the statement said.

In addition, Taiwan reminded that health is a human right and as a professional organization dealing with Public Health, the WHO should concern itself with the health and welfare of all mankind, instead of putting politics before health.

“Taiwan’s exclusion is not just a loss for Taiwan, but also a loss for the wider world, and the Ministry asks that the WHO maintain professional neutrality, instead of ceding to political interference from China,” the statement said.
